Friday the 13th!

It’s Friday the 13th. I’m not a superstitious person (although I used to be one), so let’s start off with a little piece that relates to this day and maybe poke a little fun at it. I will carry on a little story with one starting line. And the line will be, “It’s Friday the 13th!”

SO HERE WE GO!!!

It’s Friday the 13th! A day many people consider to be unlucky. Those superstitious idiots! Some of them avoid taking flights in case of any accidents and some others just call in sick and stay home all day. It’s not like staying home all day will guarantee that you are safe right? Well…I’m not one of them and I’m definitely not an idiot. So I will carry on today just like I would with any other
Friday except I have made a super big plan for the evening.

I will go to work during the day as I usually do every Friday, but instead of going straight home and plopping on the couch to watch T.V., I will make one of my dreams come true! Yes! Today’s the day! Friday the 13th of June 2014! I will propose to my girlfriend of seven years! My high school sweetheart! The girl of my dreams! My first love! I love her from the bottom of my heart! I love her more than anybody else in the world. Heck! I might even love her more than I love myself.

I can picture it now; my future with this beautiful girl. We’re going to live in a beautiful house uptown. There will be a nice park in the neighbourhood where we can go for our romantic strolls. I will pick her up from work every night and we will drive home together. We will make dinner together at home and if we’re both too tired to cook that night, we’ll go out to eat.

OK! Back to reality! I’m in the office and finishing up my work, but my mind is just not here. The excitement and eagerness I have of thinking about tonight! It’s going to be perfect! I’m going to pick her up from work then have a candle lit dinner…and NOPE! It’s not what you think; I’m cheesey, but not that cheesey. Everything will happen like a regular dinner date after a long week of work and then I’ll bring her to take a look at the new house I just bought. I will then show her to the beautiful park we have in the neighbourhood. And then, I’ll suddenly surprise her under the beautiful full moon tonight! A full moon on Friday the 13th! They say it only happens once in about 400 years. I’ll make this day super special so that I will remember it for the rest of my life.

My girlfriend just called; apparently she has to work overtime, so we won’t be able to spend dinner together. My plans are kind of ruined, but I think I can still work with it. I’ll just pick her up from work and surprise her with some take-out for dinner. And then I’ll continue with my original plan to show her the house. Yep! Nothing’s going to ruin this perfect day for me. Not the crazy superstitious freaks. Not my boss who’s always in a bad mood. Not even the crazy workload I have in front of me!

I found a note my boss left for me this morning. It was hidden under the numerous stacks of paper I have on my desk. Yeah yeah… it’s probably a reminder to get his coffee to his desk at noon sharp! That cheapo never pays back for anything he makes me buy. I took a quick look over on the note. “Please come into my office at noon and pick up the documents I left right on top. It is the proposal that you submitted two days ago and I’ve signed and approved of it. Keep up the good work!” I rubbed my eyes and read it over again just to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. I didn’t get it wrong. That grumpy cheapo actually gave me a compliment! Good work huh? Friday the 13th? Bad luck? Nonsense! Things are going pretty smooth for me today. I have a hunch that the proposal tonight will be a success.

As one hand on my watch stood over the other –both at twelve, I walk confidently towards my boss’s office. One knock, two knock. After three seconds and there was no reply, I stepped in. I couldn’t help but notice the tie inside the unwrapped gift box on his desk. It’s a beautiful tie; diagonal blue and maroon stripes. It looks just like the one I wanted, but didn’t end up buying. I had to save money for the house. Linda (my sweetheart) said she’ll surprise me with one just like it someday; either on my birthday or on our anniversary. Or maybe even she has something special planned for tonight!?

Oh DRATS!! I was too excited about tonight that I tripped on some of the gift wrapping my boss tossed on the floor. I noticed that a bit of the coffee got spilt on his desk. Just my luck! I’ve got a big splat at the top left corner of my report. How am I supposed to submit that? Looks like I’ll just have to reprint it and get Sulliman to sign it again. At least he didn’t give me hard time about it. Man, he must be in a super good mood today or have won the lottery to not even scold me one bit about the mess I made. Well I have until 4:00PM to get the report to him since he won’t be back by then, so I’ll just grab some lunch and continue with my other first.

It’s not quarter to four O’clock; I guess I should quickly print out that proposal before Sulliman gets delayed because of me. I couldn’t find my USB that I saved the report on. I searched throughout my briefcase and every drawer on my desk. I must have been so excited about tonight that I forgot it at home. It’s too troublesome to go home to get it now. If I do, it’d ruin my plans for tonight. I’ll just edit the rough copy that I saved on my work computer. That’s the quickest way I can get it done now.

Sulliman came back and locked his office. He told me to leave the report in his mailbox when I’m done and he’ll submit it for me first thing tomorrow morning. Man, that guy’s been so nice to me today. He even smiled at me before he left. Well… the quicker I get this done, the sooner I can carry out my plan.

I finished the report two hours later. I called Linda and she told me that she’s still working. Well I guess it’s the perfect time to surprise her with some dinner. I’ll go get some take-out at the sushi place we used to work back in those high school days. That’s where we first met and began dating. Now that is special! Things are even turning out better than the way I planned it. I cleaned up my desk and tossed my report into Sulliman’s mailbox before leaving. It’s a beautiful evening as the sun begins to set. This beautiful scenery! It’s like everything is smiling at me; giving me more encouragement for tonight.

Finally I have reached the sushi restaurant. I grab a menu and look over what to eat tonight. Then I heard some laughter in the background.

“I hope you loved the tie sweetie!” Said a very nice and soft voice. It’s almost as nice as Linda’s, but not quite there.

The man that is with her replies saying some super cheesey romantic lines. And then he carried on with a speech that…sounded like it was leading into a proposal. How cheesey of this guy to do the typical –proposing in a restaurant. At least he should choose one with a better ambiance in my opinion. It’s quite odd, but the man’s voice sounded awfully familiar. Out of curiosity, I slowly turned my head to take a peek at the proposal. It WAS who I thought it was. No wonder he was in such a great mood today! My boss was getting ready for his big proposal today as well. As he started the golden line, his girlfriend jumps up and gives him a tight hug screaming yes. She interrupted him before he completed his sentence, but they both know where this scene was heading. He pulls out a diamond ring (almost as big as the one I got for tonight) and slides it onto her hand. And then I look up at her face and finally realized that it was Linda! I don’t know if it was the loud clapping from the crowd or the confusion of why my girlfriend is with my boss or the shock of them making out right in front me, but I feel like I’m paralyzed at this very moment. I can’t pick up my feet and move.

Linda never noticed that I was there that night. She called me up the next day and said she needed to have a “serious” talk with me. Yep. It was the breakup talk. I asked her for an explanation of how it happened. Apparently I’ve been such a workaholic over the last 3 years, I’ve been neglecting her. She first met Sulliman when she waited for me downstairs to get off work. She was sad and he was always there for her. I wanted to explain to her that I only worked so hard so that I could make it right for our future together. I wanted to tell her that I was working hard to buy that big house and diamond ring that she always wanted. But then I realized that it’s too late now.

That was my Friday the 13th, the luckiest day of my life.
